October 9, 2012.

We are sad to report that our caterpillars have not done very well.  We have had numerous caterpillars, and one has even made it to the chrysalis stage.  However, as the life cycle continues, they did not make it.  Unfortunately, due to a number of viruses this year (info as per butterfly lady at the nursery), the success rate of our caterpillar metamorpheses was low.

Check out these articles with activites for the monarch butterfly and for animals that hibernate. Print them off and try them out!

Meet the caterpillars

These are the newest additions to our caterpillar tank:  Tiny Tim 2, Fuzzy Wuzzy and Big Billie.  We had unfortunately lost our first caterpillars Tiny Tim and Fuzzy...it was very sad.  We hope to watch our new friends eat, and eat, and eat, and eat themselves into a chrysalis.

After reading about the metamorphosis of the caterpillar, Jaeden predicted that Big Billie

was securing himself to the milkweed plant in order to become a J.  Jaeden was right!  Here's what we found this morning. (Thanks to Jaeden for the photo)  But WAIT!  During nutrition break, even more excitement.  The students got to watch Big Billie shed his caterpillar skin and see the chrysalis emerge!
